Environment Ministry, AVTR sign cooperation agreement to launch recycling banks project

Amman, Feb. 5 (Petra) – The Ministry of Environment on Thursday signed a cooperation agreement with Amman Vision Treatment & Recycling (AVTR ) to launch the "Recycling Banks Facilities" Project.

This initiative aims to develop the waste management system in the capital Amman and promote circular economy practices and environmental sustainability.

The step seeks to stimulate waste sorting operations at the source by establishing specialized centers for collecting high-value recyclable waste, mainly plastic, paper, metals, and electronic waste, in strategic locations within Amman, particularly in densely populated areas.

The project relies on a direct purchase system from citizens to replace disposal of these materials in containers, which will end up in landfills.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister of Environment, Dr. Ayman Suleiman, said the project represents a "significant" step in the Kingdom's efforts to improve waste management and promote sustainability.

He noted inauguration of recycling banks reflects Jordan's "commitment" to adopt "innovative" ecological solutions that contribute to reducing the waste-based environmental impact and strengthening the circular economy.

Additionally, he noted this effort also encourages citizens to "actively" participate in sorting waste at the source and transforming these items into valuable economic resources.

The ministry is working in partnership with the private sector and national institutions to develop an advanced waste management infrastructure, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals and Jordan's environmental vision, he pointed out.

In turn, Amjad Anasweh, AVTR CEO, stated the recycling bank project represents a "qualitative" shift in the waste management culture within the capital Amman, by encouraging sorting practices at the source and transforming waste from an environmental burden into an economic opportunity.

Anasweh expressed his pride in collaborating with the Ministry of Environment on this national project, which contributes to increasing recycling rates, empowering workers in the informal sector, and creating new job opportunities within an "organized and safe" environment.

The recycling bank facilities feature urban designs that respect Amman's environmental character and come in various operational sizes to meet needs of different areas.

This effort enhances community engagement in sustainable waste management practices and raises environmental awareness.

On its feasibility, the project is expected to contribute to create direct and indirect job opportunities, support local development, provide income sources for broad segments of society, improve the city's overall appearance, and enhance environmental performance.

The project's launch follows a comprehensive feasibility study that demonstrated its economic and operational viability, given the growing need for innovative and effective waste management solutions in the capital.
